The main objective of the ISO 39001 standard that we analyze is to establish the requirements that must be met when implementing a security traffic management system. In other words, improve road safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents and their consequences.

What is ISO 39001 and who is it for?

This international standard seeks to complement road safety regulations by establishing the parameters that will allow the creation of a management system that improves road safety.

It is aimed at all entities that want to strengthen road safety, either because they carry out all or part of their work on the road.

The goal in obtaining certification is to reduce the number of traffic accidents and fatalities and serious injuries. Reducing, at the same time, the costs that this implies for companies, the Public Administration and society.

It not only consists of applying basic safety measures such as the use of the seat belt at all times and by all the occupants of the vehicle, absolute respect for the traffic signs and the rest of the drivers, carry out a calm driving and fix and secure The load is always good, but rather seeks to apply the improvement in good practices of the personnel in driving and traveling necessary in their work activity, including commuting. For this reason, the management system helps organizations to structure good practices that avoid the accident rate of personnel or others that could affect the organization and deepens in the actions of awareness and training of personnel in the matter, including metrics that allow monitoring of said good practices.

Benefits of implementing a management system for road safety

Companies committed to these good practices manage to strengthen their image both internally and externally by showing their concern about an issue of great social importance. In addition, the number of accidents, their severity and the occupational accident rate are reduced in this high-cost section for organizations. For this reason, companies save costs in worker leave, the cost of repairing the vehicle, risk premiums in insurance policies, etc …

ISO 39001 benefits the companies that apply it, but also society as a whole by reducing the accident rate in general.

ICDQ has, through ICDQ certification marks, the accredited certification of the ISO 39001 standard by member entities of the IAF (International Accreditation Forum).

Structure of the standard

When analyzing this standard we appreciate that it does not differ too much in its structure from other similar ones. It is divided into: object and field of application, normative references (at the moment there are no other standards or documents linked to it), terms and definitions, context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement.

The novelty with respect to the content of other ISO standards is in the performance evaluation section, which expressly refers to the investigation of traffic accidents and incidents to take the necessary measures and avoid recidivism.

ISO 39001 is complementary to ISO 45001, which deals with matters related to occupational health and safety. Integrated certification of both standards can be achieved because their combination implies reducing efforts and effectively completing the risk assessment of jobs by applying preventive measures, both when working at the company’s facilities and when traveling , thus creating a perfect combo to protect the main asset of companies such as workers.
